In the vibrant city of Astana, also known as Nur-Sultan, concerns over children falling from windows have become a pressing issue. Aydar Bezymyannikov, the commander of the SPCh-5 department of the Emergency Department in Astana, has highlighted the importance of implementing safety measures to protect children from this potential danger.

Bezymyannikov's team regularly visits apartments to educate residents about the risks and the steps they can take to prevent such incidents. He emphasizes the need for physical window safety measures and vigilance.

One of the most effective measures is the installation of window guards or safety bars. These devices prevent children from opening windows wide enough to fall through, while still allowing adults to open the windows for ventilation. Window restrictors or stops, which limit the window opening to a safe size, are also recommended.

Ensuring windows have secure locks out of children's reach is crucial, as is removing furniture near windows that children could climb on to reach the window. Bezymyannikov advises against relying on mosquito nets for child safety, as they can provide an false sense of security.

In addition to these measures, it's essential to supervise children closely, especially in homes or buildings with open windows. The use of child-safe window treatments, such as cordless blinds or those with child-safe mechanisms, is also important to avoid accidents with window cords.

Recent dramatic rescues in Nur-Sultan have underscored the importance of community knowledge and readiness. Raising public awareness about window safety is key to preventing such accidents. Local authorities and parents are encouraged to adopt these measures and promote education on window safety to help reduce the number of incidents.

In 2024, there were 38 incidents of children falling out of windows in Astana. In the first half of 2025, the number has already reached 60. Bezymyannikov urges parents not to leave young children unattended for even a moment, and regular reminders to children about the danger of playing near open windows are important.

The Emergency Department in Astana continues to emphasize the importance of safety rules regarding children and windows. Bezymyannikov's advice is clear: by implementing these safety measures and practising vigilance, we can help ensure our children's safety and peace of mind in our urban environment.
