Here's a chilling tale that's bound to raise some eyebrows. A caregiver from Pritzwalk, Prignitz, was given a five-year, ten-month sentence and a five-year professional ban following a shocking incident at a Wittstock/Dosse nursing home.

The culprit, who let a resident experience an icy fate, faced charges of assault, manslaughter, and abusing a dependent person, as announced by the Neuruppin regional court (Case No.: 13 Ks 1/25). Unfortunately, this verdict remains unfinalized.

The events transpired in January 2024, when the caregiver decided to lock up the resident, who was reportedly in distress, in a wheelchair to quiet her down. He then abandoned her in a common room until 6:00 AM, allowing her to chill and calm down, despite the frigid temperatures hovering around zero degrees outside. To make matters worse, a door or a window was left open, exposing the vulnerable woman—who suffered from mental disabilities, epilepsy, and immobility—to the freezing cold.

Sadly, she perished two days later due to pneumonia, a direct consequence of this unspeakable neglect.

  • Sentence: The caregiver faced charges of assault, manslaughter, and abusing a dependent person.
  • Location: The incident took place at a nursing home in Wittstock/Dosse, with the verdict being issued by the Neuruppin regional court.
  • Conviction: The caregiver was convicted and sentenced to five years and ten months in prison, with a five-year ban from working as a healthcare professional.
  • The community policy may need to be revised to address the negligence exhibited by the caregiver, to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in nursing homes.
  • As the incident involved a resident with medical-conditions such as mental disabilities, epilepsy, and immobility, it underscores the importance of proper vocational training for caregivers to ensure they are equipped to handle such situations.
  • In light of the tragic incident, promoting health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, and nutrition programs for the elderly and people with disabilities could potentially prevent similar incidents in the future.
