Pop star Justin Timberlake battles through Lyme disease, successfully completes his world tour undeterred.
Pop star Justin Timberlake has concluded his Forget Tomorrow world tour, but not without facing some unexpected challenges. In a recent social media post, Timberlake revealed that he battled a "relentlessly debilitating" bout of Lyme disease during the tour.
Lyme disease is an illness caused by borrelia bacteria that humans can get if bitten by an infected tick. Common symptoms of Lyme disease include an early characteristic "bull's-eye" rash (erythema migrans), fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes. If untreated, symptoms can progress to severe joint pain and swelling (Lyme arthritis), neurological problems, and heart issues such as abnormal heart rhythm.
Justin Timberlake's health struggles likely involved these common symptoms and standard antibiotic treatments, although detailed specifics about his case are not public. Antibiotics are typically used to treat Lyme disease, with early Lyme disease usually treated with a 10- to 14-day course of oral antibiotics such as doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime. For Lyme arthritis, a 4-week oral antibiotic course is typical, with possible additional courses if symptoms persist; however, extended antibiotic use beyond this is not generally effective and may cause side effects.
In more advanced cases affecting the central nervous system or heart, intravenous (IV) antibiotics may be required, followed by oral antibiotics for a total course of 14–28 days. Hospital monitoring may be needed for heart-related complications. There is emerging evidence for alternative therapies like hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which may help alleviate chronic symptoms such as brain fog, joint pain, and fatigue, particularly in cases where traditional antibiotic treatments are insufficient.
Despite the challenges posed by his health condition, Timberlake opted to continue with his tour. However, he had to postpone several shows in October 2024 due to bronchitis and laryngitis, and he abruptly called off a concert in Newark, N.J., due to an injury.
Timberlake's health struggles may have contributed to low-energy performances in recent weeks, for which he faced backlash. In a show of gratitude, he expressed thanks to his supporters, crew, and fellow artists for their contributions to his tour.
In a separate development, another artist, Billy Joel, recently shared an encouraging update after a brain disorder diagnosis.
