Potential Discovery of Youth-Extending Properties in Tiny Seed by Researchers
Hunting for the Fountain of Youth: A Closer Look at Grape Seed Extract
Everyone desires longevity, and we'll go to great lengths to achieve it. Whether it's following a anti-aging diet or exercise regimen, or opting for more advanced methods like hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the pursuit of a longer life is relentless.
One promising approach scientists are chasing is the creation of a single pill that could halt aging. Although this Holy Grail is yet to be found, studies like a recent anti-aging trial from China are moving us closer...

Longevity Boost for the Elderly: Grape Seed Extract in Mice
Researchers from the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health at the Chinese Academy of Sciences found that a polyphenol in grape seeds, known as procyanidin C1, or PCC1, significantly boosted the health and lifespan of elderly mice.
PCC1's action focuses on cellular senescence, the process by which cells age, cease dividing, and release chemicals that instigate inflammation. The accumulation of senescent cells as we age is thought to contribute to the aging process and its related diseases.
PCC1 was found to specifically promote the death of senescent cells without harming healthy cells. Not only did the polyphenol significantly decrease the number of senescent cells, but it also reversed organ degeneration and led to health improvements.
When PCC1 was administered as a treatment for mice aged 24 to 27 months (equivalent to 75 to 90 years in human terms), it either increased their remaining lifespan by more than 60 percent or extended their total lifespan by over 9 percent - the equivalent of over a decade of extra life for humans.
Lead researcher Dr. Sun Yu expressed that the findings support senescent cells as a potential pharmacologic target for alleviating the health effects of aging, and further investigation of PCC1 as a potential treatment for those effects.
"Although PCC1 delivery by intermittent programs appears to be well-tolerated by mice in preclinical trials, more research is needed to determine safe routes for administering PCC1 to humans," Sun explains. "Key factors must be established through future clinical studies."
Researchers observed the treatment appeared safe, with mice tolerating the injections well. Before it can advance to human clinical trials, however, researchers must identify a human-safe dosage.

Grape Seed Extract: A Versatile Health Advantagem
This isn't the first study to link grape seed extract with longevity. A previous study revealed that mice fed grape seed extract exhibited a significant decrease in markers related to DNA damage compared with mice that didn't consume the extract.
The grape seed extract mice also showed an increase in the length of their telomeres, a critical component in the aging process. As people age, telomeres, the "caps" on the end of each DNA strand, become shorter, exposing the DNA's chromosomes to damage that can lead to life-threatening health issues.
Since this study was carried out on animals, more research is required to establish whether humans will experience the same benefits. But, given its various health advantages, incorporating a daily grape seed extract supplement into your routine might be worth considering.
For instance, grape seed extract plays a crucial role in heart health. It can activate nitric oxide in the lining of blood vessels, keeping them flexible, as well as help lessen blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels.
The polyphenols in grape seed extract have also been associated with reduced stress, better eye health, and decreased inflammation. Additionally, it contributes to the upkeep of healthy collagen and elastin levels in the skin's connective tissue.
Grape seed dietary supplements are available in capsules, tablets, and liquid extracts. Look for one standardized to 40 to 80 percent proanthocyanidins, or with an OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidin complex) content of at least 95 percent.
Take note that grape seed extract exhibits blood-thinning effects. If you're on a blood-thinning medication like aspirin or warfarin, or if you suffer from chronic bleeding problems, consult your physician before consuming grape seed extract.
Editor's Note: Are you plagued by constant fatigue? You may presume this to be a normal part of aging, but the root cause could be your master hormone. When it malfunctions, your risk of age-related diseases skyrockets.
