Ballia, India: A government health center in Beruarbari was the scene of a distressing event on Monday night, as four women were compelled to deliver their babies under the light of mobile phones due to a power outage. The cause of the outage was a burnt-out transformer at the facility, which had occurred three days prior.

Despite the availability of a generator and diesel at the health center, the power backup system failed, resulting in inadequate lighting during the deliveries. Concerned by these circumstances, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Ballia ordered an investigation, appointing a three-member committee, led by the deputy chief medical officer, to probe the incident.

Preliminary findings suggest that the power outage was the reason for the unfortunate situation. Dr. Sanjeev Barman, the CMO, informed reporters that the transformer at Beruarbari Primary Health Centre (PHC) had malfunctioned, and no backup lights were used during the deliveries.

The women who underwent delivery under these challenging conditions were identified as Neetu Devi, Manju Devi, Pinky Devi, Razia Khatoon, and their relatives. Dr. Barman assured that the culpable parties would face severe consequences once the investigation report is submitted.
