Prime Minister Modi Reviews Assam Flood Situation, Pledges Centrally-Fueled Aid

With the Northeast region under severe strain due to heavy rainfall and flooding, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a proactive stance. In a heartfelt gesture, he has personally called state leaders, expressing concern and offering unwavering support.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended a heartfelt thank you to PM Modi for his swift response to the crisis in Assam. He shared that the PM had enquired about the ongoing flood situation and assured full assistance from the Central Government for the relief and rehabilitation efforts.

According to ANI, PM Modi has reached out to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla to discuss the situation arising from the heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding. The PM has assured help and support to these regions.

The unfortunate incident has taken the lives of 11 individuals, with more than 5.15 lakh people affected across 22 districts. Sribhumi, unfortunately, bears the brunt of the disaster. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are flowing above danger levels, causing devastating agricultural and infrastructure damage.

The Prime Minister's intervention has triggered a coordinated response to the disaster. The Assam government, aided by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are working around the clock to provide relief and rescue services to those affected. As of now, over 1.85 lakh people have sought refuge in 322 relief camps and distribution centers set up by district administrations.

Even before PM Modi's assurance, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had contributed significantly to supporting the flood-affected areas. He had engaging conversations with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Governor of Manipur, signifying the government's commitment to aiding the affected states.

Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department predict heavy to very heavy rainfall over the Northeastern states for the next couple of days, followed by a decrease in intensity. The government is collaborating closely with disaster management authorities to mitigate damage and provide relief to those affected.
