Psychiatric facilities released a dangerous individual armed with knives preceding the alleged criminal activity.
A Hamburg court has ordered the detention of a 39-year-old woman suspected of carrying out a knife attack at the city's central station. Seventeen people were injured in the incident on May 23.
According to initial reports, the woman, identified as Lydia S., may have been in a psychiatric clinic in Bremerhaven until the day before the attack. Police believe there was no political or extremist motive behind the incident, with strong evidence suggesting Lydia S. was acting in a state of mental distress while dealing with her psychological illness.
The suspect, who has been homeless, allegedly stabbed people seemingly at random between platforms 13 and 14. Prior to the attack, she had been seen handling a knife on the south side of the station. Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the incident.
Lydia S. was charged with fifteen counts of attempted manslaughter along with charges related to dangerous bodily harm. The court has decided to hold her in a psychiatric facility while in custody due to her mental health background and ongoing concerns about her condition.
Formerly from Lower Saxony, Lydia S. had a criminal record that included possession of an undeclared blunt weapon, according to authorities. The incident at the central station occurred just one day after her release from a closed psychiatric ward in Geesthacht, which could suggest recent inpatient psychiatric care.
Some of the injured have since been discharged from hospitals, while the condition of the four critically injured—three women aged 24, 52, and 85, and a 24-year-old man—has stabilized according to the mayor's latest update.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities continuing to scrutinize the suspect's background in order to better understand her mental state leading up to the attack.
