Hamburg Central Station Knife Attack: Suspect in Psychiatric Care Preceding Incident

A 39-year-old woman, hailing from Braunschweig, has been detained by a judge for her alleged involvement in a knife attack at Hamburg Central Station that left 18 people injured. According to "Bild," this suspect was discharged from a psychiatric clinic in Bremerhaven on May 22 - the day before the incident.

The violent attack took place on May 23 between tracks 13 and 14, where the woman reportedly targeted individuals with a knife. She had previously been observed handling a knife on the south platform of the station.

Police indicated that the attack was seemingly devoid of political motivation; instead, they identified concrete signs of a suspected mental illness. The attacker is reported to have acted alone.

The injured victims have started to be discharged from hospitals, as confirmed by Mayor Peter Tschentscher's tweet. Four critically injured individuals have had their conditions stabilize, including three women aged 24, 52, and 85, as well as a 24-year-old man. Seven individuals have suffered severe injuries, while another seven have only light injuries.

The suspect, who is currently homeless, is a German national with origins in Lower Saxony, according to a spokesperson from the Lower Saxony Interior Ministry.

German authorities are conducting an investigation into the suspect's mental health treatment history as part of their ongoing inquiry, but no specific details have yet been made publicly available.
