Rachel Mirsen: Named Individual in Focus
New Therapist Joins University of Akron Counseling Centre
A new therapist has joined the University of Akron's Counseling Centre, bringing a unique blend of experiences and perspectives to their practice. Originally hailing from New Jersey, this individual has recently relocated to Ohio after spending a few years there.
With a strong educational background, the therapist holds BS degrees in psychology and sociology, as well as minors in disabilities studies and music from Virginia Tech. Their academic pursuits have led them to the doctoral programme in counseling psychology at the University of Akron, where they are currently working towards a PhD.
The therapist's therapeutic approach is collaborative, valuing the input and experiences of their clients. They express a particular interest in working with individuals exploring their identities and experiences, as well as those from diverse backgrounds. This inclusivity extends to their work with clients of colour, LGBTQ+ community members, and those dealing with issues related to trauma, grief, interpersonal distress, body/self image, anxiety, and depression.
Under the supervision of Maya Akinfosile, the therapist is guided during their internship. Akinfosile, a seasoned supervisor, ensures that the therapist maintains a safe, supportive, and authentic environment for their clients. The therapist's work is also heavily influenced by a feminist and multicultural perspective, emphasising connection and community within their therapeutic framework.
One of the therapist's key priorities is to provide a supportive space for clients, allowing them to feel comfortable and genuine during their sessions. The therapist's interpersonal approach, which focuses on connection and community, is central to this commitment.
Interestingly, there are no prerequisites specified for therapy candidates, making the therapist's services accessible to a wide range of individuals seeking help. Whether you're a student, faculty member, or member of the local community, this therapist is here to support you on your journey towards emotional well-being.
