Rapidly Sold Out Initial Launch: Indian Consumers Adore McDonald's Novel 'Protein Plus Slice'
McDonald's India has entered the plant-based protein market with the launch of its Protein Plus Slice on July 29, 2025. The 100% vegetarian, plant-based protein slice, priced at 25 Indian rupees (approximately $0.29 USD), was an immediate success, selling out within the first day.
The Protein Plus Slice, which contains 5 grams of protein, was developed in collaboration with the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI) and adds a nutritional boost to various McDonald's burgers. With this addition, customers can now enjoy their favourite burgers with the added nutritional goodness of protein through dining in, Drive-Thru, or McDelivery app.
The Protein Plus Slice is free from artificial colours, flavours, onion, and garlic, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences. The product targets vegetarian consumers looking to increase protein intake and is made from a blend of soy, pea, and whey proteins to mimic cheese.
In the first 24 hours of its launch, more than 32,000 Protein Plus Slices were sold across West and South India. Mumbai led the sales with over 11,000 slices, followed by Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, each selling more than 1,500 slices.
The launch was supported by a campaign featuring celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, emphasizing personalized protein intake and health awareness. The initiative aims to help McDonald's stay relevant while addressing the protein deficiency common among Indian consumers.
Akshay Jatia, CEO of Westlife Foodworld, stated that the Protein Plus Range allows customers to personalize their protein intake. He added that the Protein Plus Range reflects their ongoing commitment to their 'Real Food, Real Good' philosophy.
Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director of CSIR-CFTRI, expressed excitement about continuing their partnership with McDonald's India to advance nutritional innovation in the QSR space.
