Kazakhstan's prime minister, Oljas Bektenov, recently held a meeting with the head of the European Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Kluge, to discuss collaborative efforts in healthcare. The talks centered on bolstering the Kazakh government's joint work with the WHO to attain sustainable development goals in healthcare.

Under the two-year agreement for 2024-2025, this partnership prioritizes universal health coverage, population health improvement, and enhancing human resource capacity. According to Bektenov, WHO serves as an essential strategic partner, contributing to Kazakhstan's declining population morbidity rates in respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality, including from malignant tumors.

Adherence to the principles of the Alma-Ata Declaration on Primary Healthcare has resulted in reduced maternal and infant mortality rates in the country, as well as an increase in life expectancy. Bektenov stated that Kazakhstan values strengthening primary healthcare, with their president's initiative for a Coalition of Countries for Primary Healthcare gaining WHO Director-General and member states' support. The imminent launch of this coalition at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva is expected to be a significant step in their joint work.

Bektenov added that Kazakhstan is actively expanding healthcare service coverage, both in healthcare institutions and for home care. Kluge acknowledged the significant advancements in Kazakhstan's national healthcare system. The discussion concluded with both parties outlining potential areas for further improvement in delivering high-quality medical services and achieving optimal population health levels.

As Kazakhstan and the WHO move forward, initiatives like primary health care reform, emergency preparedness, and risk communication, as well as integrating global health initiatives, will shape their collaborative efforts in attaining sustainable healthcare development. The Coalition of Countries for Primary Healthcare, aimed at strengthening primary healthcare worldwide, will be key in this endeavor.
