New Study Links Vascular Risk Factors to Dementia Risk

Recent research has shed light on a little-known connection: certain midlife vascular risk factors—specifically high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking—are linked to an increased risk of dementia later in life.

To delve deeper into this connection, researchers analyzed data from 7,700 participants aged 45-74 over a 33-year period. They found that, on average, 22-44% of dementia cases by age 80 were attributed to midlife and late-life vascular risk factors.

Additionally, the study found that these vascular risk factors had a higher impact on dementia risk in females, Black participants, and those not carrying the APOE ε4 gene, a genetic marker linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.

In other words, promoting optimal vascular health from midlife onward could be vital for reducing the risk of dementia, supporting the idea that "what's good for the heart is good for the brain"!
