In the Aftermath of Tragic Knife Attack, Calls for Enhanced Security and Infrastructure at Hamburg Central Station
Following a devastating knife attack at Hamburg Central Station on Friday evening, local authorities and politicians are considering measures to improve passenger safety and alleviate overcrowding. The incident left 12 people injured, with six still in critical condition.
The perpetrator, a 39-year-old woman, had previously come to the attention of Hamburg police, with a history of disturbing incidents. According to the prosecution, in February, she was violent towards a child at Hamburg Airport. She was examined by a doctor and subsequently admitted to a psychiatric clinic. Another incident occurred in March at the same clinic, where she allegedly kicked another patient.
On the day preceding the attack, the suspect was at the airport again, displaying visible injuries on her face that led a rescue service member to alert the police. The suspect claimed she was injured during a clinic stay and did not wish to press charges, allowing her to leave. The woman was released from the psychiatric hospital on the same day she was admitted earlier in the month. No medical findings at the time of her release justified further detention.
On the day of the attack, she returned to Hamburg Airport, stating she intended to fly to Paris. However, she was unable to do so because she could not confirm her identity.
German Police Union Chairman Rainer Wendt has called for better coordination in dealing with the mentally ill. He suggested regular evaluations by qualified experts, joint risk assessments with the police, and possible reforms to medical confidentiality rules and data protection laws to inform police when potentially dangerous individuals are released from psychiatric hospitals. Wendt also emphasized the need for close medical supervision of medication that reduces the risk.
He also demanded the use of modern video technology at "crime hotspots" and the increase of police officers to ensure prompt response times.
Railway CEO Richard Lutz expressed sympathy for the incident and thanked staff for their swift and measured response. However, he acknowledged that achieving 100% security in such an open system, even in a nation as open as Germany, is not possible. Lutz emphasized the importance of continually refining security concepts and learning from such incidents.
Calls for action were also heard to address the overcrowding at the historic station, which sees over half a million passengers daily, with certain platforms being particularly congested.Platforms 13 and 14, where the attack took place, were highlighted as being a particular concern due to their narrowness and impact on the deployment of security and rescue forces.
Proposed measures to ease overcrowding include better crowd management strategies during peak hours, improvements in real-time information systems, and infrastructure upgrades to facilitate a smoother flow of passengers.
Passenger association Pro Bahn Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg also advocate for reducing overcrowding on platforms 13 and 14, with the possibility of long-distance travelers using Dammtor station as an alternative.
The Left party transport expert, Heike Sudmann, does not see a causal connection between the incident and the crowded conditions at the main station.
