Spain Sees 3% Rise in Abortions in 2024, Driven by Pharmacological Method
In 2024, a total of 106,172 women in Spain underwent abortions, marking a 3.075 case increase from the previous year. This rise comes amidst varied regional trends and socio-economic factors.
The rise in abortions was largely driven by the pharmacological method, which saw a 31% increase, particularly in public storage facilities. Cantabria led in public storage center abortions, with 88.49%, followed by Galicia, La Rioja, and the Balearic Islands. However, the reason for most abortions was the woman's voluntary decision (94.62%).
Socio-economically, 57.98% of women who had an abortion were employed, while 17.09% were unemployed. In terms of living arrangements, 7.71% of women lived alone, and 28.92% cohabited with a partner. Contraceptive use also played a role, with 49.14% of women not using any method at the time of conception.
Regional data on the proportion of abortions in public storage institutions was not explicitly stated for 2024 in Germany.
The increase in abortions in Spain in 2024, driven by the pharmacological method and voluntary decisions, highlights the need for continued examination of regional trends and socio-economic factors surrounding reproductive choices.
