Speaker at Chicago fundraiser for CURE Epilepsy: Marine veteran to share insights

Retired Marine Veteran and Epilepsy Advocate, Captain Jack Somers, to Speak at Chicago Fundraiser

Captain Jack Somers, a resident of Cary, will be sharing his inspiring story at a fundraiser event in Chicago this Saturday. The event, hosted by CURE Epilepsy, will take place at the Fairmount Chicago Millennium Park.

Captain Somers, a retired marine veteran, was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2012, 60 days after returning from his deployment to Afghanistan. His first seizure occurred while running a local Turkey Trot, an incident that changed his life forever. Despite undergoing approximately 50 treatments for his epilepsy, Captain Somers' doctors have stated that medications can only help reduce symptoms, not cure the condition.

Despite this challenging diagnosis, Captain Somers has become an advocate for finding a cure for epilepsy. He will be joined at the gala by Broadway stars Jeremy Jordan and Miguel Cervantes, both of whom have personal connections to the cause. Jordan's daughter Adelaide passed away from epilepsy at the age of 3, while Cervantes lost his daughter under similar circumstances.

Jordan, a renowned actor known for his role in the musical 'Smash', will be participating in the Gala for CURE Epilepsy on Saturday. Cervantes, who played Alexander Hamilton during the musical run in Chicago, will also perform at the event. Cervantes' daughter, like Captain Somers, was diagnosed with epilepsy at a young age.

The gala promises to be a moving and inspiring event, bringing together individuals who have been affected by epilepsy and those who are dedicated to finding a cure. Captain Somers' story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of continuing the fight against this debilitating condition.
