Sydney Homeowner's $7,000 Pigeon Infestation Nightmare
A suburban Sydney homeowner has been left with a hefty bill and a health hazard after discovering a severe pigeon infestation in their roof. The pigeons had been living in their living spaces for up to six years, causing significant damage and posing serious health risks.
The pest control worker who discovered the infestation described it as one of the heaviest they had seen in a long time. The pigeons had turned the loose fill insulation into nesting material and accumulated waste over the years. The droppings had seeped into the home below, causing a disgusting sewage leak. The pigeons were living among piles of droppings and swarming baby bird lice, creating an unsanitary and unhygienic environment.
The homeowner has been advised that removing the pigeons, cleaning the waste, and repairing the roof is estimated to cost around $7,000. The pigeon colony had been thriving in the roof, with baby pigeons also present. The fate of these baby pigeons was to be removed to a safe yard once the adults were scared out and the entry points patched. However, there are no details about who adopted them or if they were taken to another location.
Pigeons carry significant health risks, including diseases like salmonella and histoplasmosis. The pest control worker advised homeowners to call professionals immediately if they see pigeons living in their roofs to prevent such infestations and the associated health and financial risks.
