Tech giant Intel increases investment in COVID-19 combat by another $50 million

In a significant move to combat the ongoing pandemic, Intel Corporation has announced a series of initiatives in collaboration with the Government of India, academic institutions, healthcare organisations, and industry bodies. The tech giant has pledged an additional $50 million to its existing $50 million commitment, bringing its total contribution to $100 million.

One of the key initiatives is the Intel COVID-19 Response and Readiness program, which aims to accelerate advancements in diagnosis, treatment, and vaccine development. Leveraging technologies like AI, high-performance computing, and edge-to-cloud service delivery, the program will provide funding to Intel's customers and partners.

Intel's efforts in India focus on COVID-19 testing, genome sequencing, diagnostics, predicting outbreaks, and improving medical care management and administration. The company is working closely with India's Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, to deploy Intel client and server solutions for faster and less expensive COVID-19 testing and coronavirus genome sequencing.

In addition, Intel is collaborating with India's IT industry body Nasscom to build an application ecosystem and multi-cloud back end for population-scale COVID-19 diagnostics, predicting outbreaks, and improving medical care management and administration.

Recognising the importance of education during these challenging times, Intel has launched the Intel Online Learning initiative. This program aims to support education-focused nonprofit organisations and business partners to provide devices and online learning resources to students without access to technology. The initiative will collaborate with public school districts to provide necessary resources, including PC donations, online virtual resources, study-at-home guides, and device connectivity assistance.

Furthermore, Intel has allocated up to $10 million for an innovation fund supporting external partners and employee-led relief projects. This fund aims to address critical needs in communities, in addition to the $10 million in donations already announced.

In a statement, Intel CEO Bob Swan said, "We are committed to accelerating access to technology to combat the current pandemic and prepare society for future crises."

These initiatives are part of Intel's broader commitment to combat the novel coronavirus and prepare society for future crises. The company's efforts in India are in addition to its previous pledge of $40 million, which will fund the Intel COVID-19 Response and Readiness and Online Learning initiatives.

As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, Intel's commitment to India underscores the company's commitment to using its technology and resources to help fight the virus and support those affected.
