Thousands Face Potential Health Consequences Due to Tobacco Use

In Saxony, tens of thousands of individuals wrestle with severe health issues stemming from tobacco consumption, according to a recent analysis by AOK Plus. The health insurance company asserts that smoking remains a significant, often underestimated health hazard, with approximately one in five adults continuing to smoke regularly. Concerningly, this trend extends to young people as well.

In light of these findings, AOK Plus is encouraging individuals to take the decision towards a smoke-free life on World No Tobacco Day (May 31).

Quitting smoking offers immediate and substantial health advantages, according to AOK Plus. The risk of cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases significantly decreases. Furthermore, physical fitness enhances, and life expectancy increases. The body begins to reap benefits even after a brief period.

Specifically, within 20 minutes of quitting, heart rate and blood pressure reduce towards normal levels, reducing immediate strain on the heart. Circulation improves shortly thereafter, benefiting overall blood flow. Within 12 hours, carbon monoxide levels in the blood drop to normal, increasing oxygen availability throughout the body. Cilia in the lungs start to recover, improving the lungs' ability to clear mucus and reduce infection risk.

Within the first few months of quitting, lung function improves as cilia regrow, leading to less coughing, easier breathing, and a lower risk of infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Activities like climbing stairs and sleeping become easier due to improved lung function.
