In the vast and beautiful wilderness of Yakutia (the Sakha Republic), incidents of people getting lost while mushroom picking on the Viluisk Highway are not unheard of. The latest such incident involved a man born in 1970 who went mushroom picking and got lost near the 15th kilometer of the Viluisk Highway.

On August 8, the Emergency Service of the Republic of Sakha responded to this incident, dispatching five rescuers to the scene. The man, who sustained an injury to his ankle during his ordeal, sought help independently. Unfortunately, no information is provided about his eventual rescue or safe return.

This operation is a separate incident from two previous ones on the Viluisk Highway. On the same day, the Emergency Service also responded to incidents involving two women who had gone mushroom picking and got lost near the 19th kilometer of the highway. The women contacted the emergency service using mobile connectivity and were found and taken to a safe location by 18:40. Their current condition is reported as satisfactory.

Yakutia's wilderness areas, with their dense taiga, long distances between settlements, and limited cell phone coverage, pose challenges for navigation, especially for those unfamiliar with the landscape. To minimize the risk of getting lost, mushroom pickers are advised to take several precautions.

These include going with a knowledgeable guide or experienced local, wearing bright, distinctive clothing, carrying a reliable GPS device or compass and map, leaving a detailed plan with someone trustworthy, bringing communication devices, travelling in groups, marking your path, packing sufficient supplies, avoiding venturing too far from known trails or roads, and being mindful of weather conditions.

By following these precautions, mushroom pickers can minimize the risk of getting lost and safely enjoy foraging in Yakutia's beautiful but challenging wilderness. The Emergency Service of the Republic of Sakha reminds all nature lovers to be cautious and prepared for unexpected situations during walks and hikes in the forest.
