Thyroid medication's detrimental impact on bone strength

Thirty million Americans are afflicted with hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by insufficient production of thyroid hormones. Symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, depression, and brain fog can be difficult to diagnose accurately due to their similarity to other conditions. Nonetheless, approximately 23 million individuals are administered levothyroxine, a thyroid medication marketed as Synthroid, making it one of the most commonly prescribed thyroid drugs nationwide.

Recent research, however, raises concerns about the potential adverse effects of levothyroxine on bone health. Elena Ghotbi, M.D., a research fellow at Johns Hopkins University, suggests that an excess of thyroid hormones from the medication could put individuals at risk for osteoporosis and life-threatening fractures, even when patients have normal thyroid levels.

Ghotbi and her team reviewed data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), a long-running study on aging, assessing 81 patients taking levothyroxine and 364 non-users. Over a six-year period, the team determined that patients using levothyroxine experienced a greater loss of total body bone mass and density, despite normal thyroid levels.

Mammen, another researcher and co-author, advises that adults taking levothyroxine should discuss their treatment with their doctor to weigh the benefits against potential risks. Additionally, she recommends regular tests to monitor thyroid function, as some patients have taken levothyroxine for years without the need for it.

In the interest of maintaining bone health while using thyroid medication, individuals should consider lifestyle modifications like maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and engaging in regular exercise.
