In a significant shift, the Nizhny Novgorod region has announced new rules for animal burials, effective from July 2025. The ban on burying animals comes as the region aligns its legislation with federal law, aiming to prevent the spread of diseases such as rabies, anthrax, foot-and-mouth disease, and brucellosis among both animals and humans.

The new rules allow only cremation for animal burials in the region. However, the capacity of the crematorium in the Nizhny Novgorod region to handle an influx of deceased pets, livestock, and poultry following the new pet burial laws is unclear. Typically, human crematoriums are not designed to handle large volumes of animal remains, necessitating specialized facilities for pet and livestock cremations.

The video report on these changes can be found on GTRK "Nizhny Novgorod". For precise assessment, more information from local government, veterinary services, or the crematorium operator would be needed.

Citizens may face administrative penalties if they violate the animal burial law. Violators could be fined between 4-5 thousand rubles, while organizations may be fined up to 700 thousand rubles. DIY pet cemeteries on the outskirts of the city are now illegal, but the impact of this ban on these areas is currently unknown.

The only legal option for deceased pets is cremation, which is safe, eco-friendly, and complies with veterinary norms. Both cremation services can be arranged through veterinary clinics. After cremation, pet owners can collect the ashes in a special urn and bury them legally.

The news of the new rules has elicited mixed reactions from Nizhny Novgorod residents. The law prohibits storing or disposing of animal carcasses in water. Collective cremation is also possible, with the ashes being disposed of by the crematorium.

Despite the challenges, the new rules aim to ensure a safer environment for both animals and humans in the region. For more information, residents are encouraged to consult with their local authorities or veterinary services.
