University of Park to Present Unique "Vision Quest" Art Display
In the heart of Parkville, Missouri, the Campanella Gallery at Park University is set to open its 2022-23 season with an extraordinary exhibit titled "Vision Quest: A Journey of Seeing." This unique art show, running from Monday, Aug. 8, to Friday, Oct. 28, showcases the profound work of retired academic physician and fine artist, Dr. Nancy Tilson-Mallett.
Dr. Tilson-Mallett, a board-certified internal medicine and hospice and palliative care specialist, was diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of 45. Her personal journey with this group of eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness has inspired a series of thought-provoking artworks.
The exhibit, located within Norrington Center on the University's flagship Parkville Campus, offers a glimpse into Dr. Tilson-Mallett's world. Her passion for nature, colour, and patterns, combined with her medical background, is beautifully expressed in her art. The artwork in the exhibit is her interpretation of her diagnostic studies, primarily presented in silk paintings or complex cloth with intricate embellishments of embroidery, felting, and beading.
The Campanella Gallery's regular business hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, closed. However, during the exhibit (Aug. 15-Oct. 7 and Oct. 17-Oct. 28), the Gallery's hours have been extended, with different hours for weekdays and weekends. It's recommended to check Park University's official website or contact the Campanella Gallery directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
In addition to the exhibit, an artist reception will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Gallery. Admission to the Gallery is free, making it accessible to all who wish to experience this compelling display of art and medicine.
Dr. Tilson-Mallett, a resident of the Hyde Park area of Kansas City, Mo., continues to teach as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Medical Humanities and Bioethics within UMKC's medical school. Her art serves as a testament to the power of creativity in navigating life's challenges, and her exhibit at the Campanella Gallery is a must-see for art enthusiasts and those interested in the intersection of art and medicine.
Dr. Tilson-Mallett's art, stemming from her personal medical condition of glaucoma, explores the realm of eye health within the broader context of health and wellness, offering a unique fusion of science and medical-conditions with eye-health and art. This remarkable exhibit, "Vision Quest: A Journey of Seeing," located at the Campanella Gallery, showcases her interpretation of diagnostic studies, primarily presented in silk paintings or complex cloth with intricate embellishments of embroidery, felting, and beading.
