Unveiling Naeem Willett, a Fish Expert in the Realm of Aquatic Life

Senior Research Associate at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center Focuses on Fish Aging

In the sun-kissed shores of Florida, a marine scientist named Naeem, originally from Bellport, Long Island, New York, has found his home at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC). His journey in marine science began with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 2003, followed by a Master's of Science degree from Delaware State University.

Naeem's work at SEFSC primarily revolves around sectioning and aging fish otoliths, or ear bones. This meticulous process helps researchers understand the life history of various marine species, including red snapper, scamp grouper, gag grouper, golden tilefish, and blueline tilefish.

One of his notable projects was a Natural Resource Damage Assessment for a Gulf sturgeon research project in the Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Naeem moved from Delaware to Florida to contribute to the ongoing research and recovery efforts.

During his downtime, Naeem volunteers at the SEFSC's Panama City laboratory and participates in the Southeast Fisheries Science Center's shark survey projects, such as GULFSPAN. His work supports the Life History and Biology Branch of the Fisheries Assessment, Technology, Engineering, and Survey Division.

When not immersed in marine research, Naeem enjoys spending time with his family and participating in amateur 9-ball pool leagues and tournaments, including the American Pool Players Association National team tournament. He sees his work as an opportunity to open the door to the marine science field, particularly for minorities, and often takes pleasure in explaining his work to the public.

Naeem's passion for marine science, combined with his dedication to education and outreach, makes him a valuable asset to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center and the broader marine science community.
