Snoozing: A Common Morning Habit with Potential Drawbacks

Mornings can be challenging, and the snooze button on the alarm clock might seem like a tempting solution. However, a study conducted by a team led by Rebecca Robbins, a sleep researcher from Harvard Medical School, suggests that this practice may not be beneficial. The findings were published in the journal "Scientific Reports".

Data from over 21,000 users of the "Sleep Cycle" app, collected over approximately three million nights, revealed that the snooze function is used in nearly 56% of nights by the users. On average, those who frequently used the snooze function snoozed for about 20 minutes every day, with users in Sweden averaging 2.7 snoozes on days when they used the function.

The study indicated that intermittent use of the snooze button can disrupt important sleep stages, particularly during the REM (rapid eye movement) cycle, which is critical for cognitive function and memory consolidation [2]. Frequent snoozing can result in sleep fragmentation, leading to reduced sleep quality [1][2].

Inconsistent sleep schedules, caused by the use of snooze buttons, can affect the body's natural circadian rhythm, potentially impacting mood, performance, and health [2]. Women tend to use the snooze button slightly more often than men [1].

Interestingly, the study found that those who slept a maximum of five hours each night did not use snooze buttons as they were cautious about utilizing every minute of their sleep, considering they had little extra time for snoozing.

Experts recommend establishing a consistent wake-up time, skipping the snooze button, and maintaining healthy sleep habits to improve overall sleep quality [1][2]. Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine and creating a sleep-conducive environment can also contribute to better sleep.

Lack of sleep can affect mental health, increase the risk of heart disease, and reduce cognitive performance [1]. While more research is needed to fully understand the effects of snoozing on sleep patterns and potential gender differences, it is essential to prioritize good sleep habits for optimal health.
