Valiant Medical Professional Battles Floods to Assist Elderly Citizens Stranded in Inundated Area
Catching the Spotlight: Major Tomasz Nowak, the Heroic Doctor
Weekend pictures took social media by storm, showcasing Major Tomasz Nowak wading through knee-deep waters to rescue elderly residents stranded by the catastrophic floods ravaging parts of southern and southwestern Poland. The 2025 floods, the worst in almost three decades, have left numerous towns submerged, with lives and health of those in hardest-hit areas a top priority for authorities.
Poland's General Command of the Armed Forces shared the striking images, depicting Nowak, a major and medical doctor, battling the rising waters to reach his patients. "Major Tomasz Nowak, the rescuing superhero!" read the caption by the military command. The moving photos show the doctor providing medical assistance to an elderly person, one of the many vulnerable individuals left in critical condition due to the floods.
Jan Grabiec, a Polish government spokesperson, reported that as of Saturday, 2.39 million people were residing in disaster-declared regions. Over 749 towns and villages have been impacted, with around 57,000 residents directly affected. The disaster has forced the evacuation of 6,544 people from worst-hit areas.
In one captivating image, Nowak can be seen mid-wade, making his way through murky floodwaters, heading towards isolated residents. His courageous efforts symbolize the urgency and determination of the ongoing relief efforts in the region. Beyond military and police support, medical personnel like Nowak play a crucial role in ensuring affected residents receive the necessary care.
As recently as September 2024, Poland faced significant flooding, with losses estimated at PLN 13 billion [5]. This year, the floods have tested the limits of existing infrastructure, demonstrating the growing challenges posed by extreme weather events. Despite these challenges, individual acts of bravery, such as Nowak's, continue to bring hope to those affected by the disaster.
