USDA Issues Public Health Alert for Certain Ham Salads Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a public health alert for certain Reser's and Molly's Kitchen ham salads due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The alert was triggered by the recall of breadcrumb ingredients by Newly Weds Foods due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Reser's Fine Foods, Inc., based in Topeka, Kansas, identified the use of these recalled breadcrumbs in their products.

As of now, there are no confirmed reports of illness related to the recalled products. However, due to the serious nature of Listeria infections, especially for pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, the USDA advises consumers who have purchased the following products not to eat them and to discard or return them to the place of purchase:

  • Reser's Fine Foods Ham Salad (12-ounce tubs with sell-by date 09/01/25)
  • Molly's Kitchen Ham Salad (5-pound tubs with sell-by date 08/31/25)

These products bear the USDA mark of inspection and were distributed nationally.

The USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline is available for questions at 1-888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or via email at [email protected]. Consumers can also visit the FSIS Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System, available 24/7, to report food safety issues.

FSIS urges anyone who may have consumed the recalled products and is experiencing flu-like symptoms to seek immediate medical attention and inform their healthcare provider about the potential exposure to contaminated food. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, confusion, and convulsions.

FSIS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if additional products are identified or new developments arise. Retailers are also being told not to sell or serve the affected products.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause a serious infection called listeriosis. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

The USDA advises consumers to follow food safety guidelines to prevent foodborne illnesses. This includes cleaning and sanitising surfaces and hands, separating raw meat from other foods, cooking meat to the right temperature, and refrigerating foods promptly.

The latest update on the USDA public health alert is that the alert was first issued on July 27, 2025, and remains active as of the latest reports on July 28, 2025.
