## Conditional Release for Slender Man Attacker Morgan Geyser Approved

After eight years of institutionalization, Morgan Geyser, the Wisconsin woman involved in the infamous Slender Man case, has been granted conditional release. The decision was made by Judge Scott Wagner in July 2025, making Geyser, now 22, eligible for release around August 4, 2025, pending final adjustments to her release plan.

The Slender Man case first gained widespread attention in 2014 when Geyser, along with her friend Anissa Weier, lured Payton Leutner, their classmate, to a Waukesha park and stabbed her 19 times. The girls, who were both 12 years old at the time, claimed they were trying to appease the fictional character Slender Man.

Both Geyser and Weier were found not guilty by reason of mental defect or disease and were committed to mental health institutions. Geyser spent the last seven years at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute.

### Details of Geyser's Release Plan

The conditional release plan includes living in a residential placement facility. Court approval is required for any changes in her placement or if she needs to wear a GPS monitoring device. The details of the plan were not shared in court.

Geyser's defense attorney, Maureen McMahon Cotton, argued that Geyser only read what the facility allowed and that staff were aware she had been communicating with a man who collects murder memorabilia. However, state health officials argued that Geyser had not been truthful about reading a novel about murder and black market organ sales. Judge Bohren concluded that Geyser wasn't trying to hide anything and ordered state health officials to continue developing a release plan.

### Anissa Weier's Release

Anissa Weier, the other defendant in the case, was released in 2021 to live with her father after serving a portion of her commitment. The details of her conditional release were not disclosed. Her current status is not prominently updated in recent news, but she is known to have been released and is likely under supervision as well.

The case has highlighted the complexities of mental health and criminal justice, particularly in cases involving minors and fictional influences. Both Geyser and Weier's releases have been subject to extensive legal and public scrutiny.
